I recently participated in a research project centered on innovating the hiring process to find the ‘right’ candidates. Forbes contributor and business consultant Robert Sher interviewed me and I shared some of the unique ways we approach hiring. The article, titled Want To Hire The ‘Right’ Candidate? Take Them To Lunch With The Team, goes on a deep dive into techniques for building a strong culture by hiring right-fit candidates.
I will never get tired of hearing numerous Giroux Glass employees say, “I’m proud to be a part of the Giroux team.” During this time in the construction industry when labor shortages are part of common conversation throughout our market, we at Giroux stand firm on taking the time to continue investing in our long and costly hiring process. The results are priceless and the effort well spent when we bring on team members who are proud to join a company where culture and values are of paramount importance. Our employees know that we care enough to invest in them even prior to their first day.
Once a new employee walks through our doors, we do our best to court our employees for as long as they are with our company. With that said, our average tenure for our employees (including our field team) is 16 years and our turnover rate is less than 5%. Currently, the estimated industry-wide construction employee turnover rate is 21.4%, making it one of the highest rates among any industry.
At Giroux Glass, this is no easy task and it’s one our entire management team takes seriously. By investing in our employees as well as our future employees, we let them know that they are important to us. Our investment in our employees leads to happier employees as well. We have been recognized as a best place to work several years by industry surveys. Additionally, our employees take pride in their work which leads to their investment of quality work for our clients. The synergy created by a team with shared values and common goals is truly something remarkable. When the jobs come and go, the sense of pride lasts a lifetime.
