Construction Career Day Was a ‘Hit’

The College of Engineering at University of Nevada, Las Vegas hosted this year’s Construction Career Day on October 10th, 2015.

This day was dedicated to introducing high school students to careers in the construction industry and construction-related fields including the trades, construction management, engineering, architecture, and related secondary fields such as accounting, marketing, and facilities management. It was designed to educate our youth about a professional industry that is exciting, lucrative, and full of prospects for career development.

This one-day event allowed students to see a demonstration of different types of construction machinery, participate in workshops, and to learn about internships, apprenticeship programs, and higher education opportunities. (Source: www.unlv.edu)

We were proud to be there to represent glass and glazing subcontractors, and to help Nevada high schoolers get excited about this trade we’re in!

To help with that process, Tim Gibson and Daniel Rodriguez (of Giroux Glass) devised a fun and safe way to get the kids directly involved with learning about glass.

They created a “glass shatter box” where students could take turns breaking annealled and tempered glass in a controlled environment, and notice the different properties of each. Annealed glass would shatter into large shards, whereas tempered glass, which is most sensitive on its edges, would break up into small, little pieces and crackle like Rice Krispies cereal.

Thanks to Mark, Aaron, and Shaun of Trulite Glass & Aluminum Solutions who kindly donated the glass, and were there with us all day to share about our industry.

It’s safe to say our staff and demonstrations were a big hit among the teens, who were equally both surprised and eager at the chance to demolish some glass!
