What’s Missing in Our Phones and Social Media?

One of today’s biggest delights is having quick communication available between parties in our business and personal world. Our communities have changed dramatically since the global use of computers and smartphones — they have been a boon to contacting one another and getting answers or responses fast.
But still, something important is missing….

A handshake; a smile; an unwavering eye; a shrug; a voice that reflects the sender’s mood of joy, trust, focused interest, or displeasure; a head nodding; compassion; understanding; a lifted eyebrow; a stern face; a blank face; likeability; personality; and, importantly, character.

Whenever Giroux Glass had a major job, if I had not met the principals of the contracting firm we were working with, I felt it was important that we personally introduced ourselves. This enabled us to better understand what was expected in their team relationships. It helped us build trust, and allowed for our clients to personally have respect for our interest, professionalism, and expertise.

Communicating really works well over the phone or in an email, but it is most effective once we have established the initial trust and respect that face-to-face contact can provide. If you have the opportunity (and the means) to meet in person, I would highly recommend taking the time and making the effort to. This is what makes repeat business! It has been a driving force behind repeat business and happy customers here at Giroux Glass for over 69 years.
