SoFi Stadium
Los Angeles is known as the global capital of the entertainment industry. As well as having a rich artistic legacy and international influence, our city is also known for many architectural landmarks. The latest crowning jewel to further garner this reputation is SoFi Stadium, a truly revolutionary urban development and pioneering high-tech marvel.
SoFi Stadium is the shared home of the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers and hosted Super Bowl LVI in February 2022. The facility expects to host the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2028 Summer Olympics, as well as play a role in the 2026 World Cup.
Designed by HKS Architects and opened in 2020, this facility is more than just a stadium. Located on a 298-acre parcel of land that was once home to the Hollywood Park horse-racing track, SoFi Stadium is part of the larger Hollywood Park Entertainment compound. In addition to the stadium that seats up to 100,000, the campus also includes a 6,000-seat performance venue called YouTube Theater, a 2.5-acre plaza, and a 6-acre lake — complete with waterfalls. Eventually, the location will include a 25-acre landscaped outdoor park for use by the general public.
Project Scope
Giroux Glass was honored to be part of the team that built this remarkable sports and entertainment destination. Our scope of work included the installation of aluminum storefronts and doors throughout the entire facility – as well as all-glass doors and glass panels at concessions. Also included was the installation of the privacy glass on levels 1, 2, 6, 7, and 8.
Challenges
There was a high level of complexity at every step of this project; our skills and experience with organization, scheduling, planning, and forecasting were substantial factors in the successful completion of our scope.
Logistics
Merely getting from one side of the stadium to the distant other, our crew had to plan highly efficient schedules for material deliveries and their subsequent installation. This had to be carefully planned and coordinated to accommodate the substantial time required to arrive at our openings.
Deadlines
Additional challenges were faced by the tight project timelines set by the contractors. All expectations were that we not miss any of a diverse set of definitive deadlines that included city inspections, health inspections, code checks, and more. Our Giroux field team continually pushed to get work done on schedule and did not miss a single deadline.
Safety
A new challenge, one unique to this period, was the need to quickly adapt to working during a pandemic. Our crew continually updated safety procedures and protocols to keep our team safe and accommodate to ever-changing city, county, and project site rules and requirements.
Teamwork
Lastly, coordinating around the presence and activities of other trades on a project this huge presented its own unique challenges. During the stadium’s peak construction period, as many as 3,500 workers were on site daily, and more than 17,000 workers contributed to the project, amassing more than 18 million worker hours.
Construction Quality and Craftsmanship
We were proud to hear from our contractors that our Giroux Glass PM team was diligent and always met their commitments with the Turner AECOM Hunt Joint Venture (THJV) team. “The Giroux Glass team’s ‘can-do’ attitude was very appreciated by every member of THJV. The team always helped find a solution to challenges.”
John Cox, Giroux Glass’ Director of CA Project Operations, shares this sentiment with the entire crew. “Our team provided us with a level of expertise that was invaluable during this unique project.” He continues, “Our commitment to safety, scheduling, and collaboration was impressive, and our ability to meet all the deadlines was remarkable. I am proud of everyone from Giroux that contributed to the success of SoFi Stadium by being part of the team that built this stunning world-class facility.”
