Porterville Courthouse – Ballistic Glass Replacement
Giroux Glass was engaged by Roebbelen Contracting to complete a highly specialized glazing project for the Porterville Courthouse. The objective was to replace 2,400 square feet of ballistic glass throughout the courthouse. Given the critical security requirements and the high-performance standards of the project, our team delivered solutions that demonstrated precision, expertise, and ingenuity.
The glass installed was Low E tempered, insulated, and Ballistic Level 3 rated, at an impressive 1-13/16″ in thickness. It served dual purposes, contributing to the courthouse’s overall security as well as maintaining energy efficiency. The largest individual lites measured an expansive 50 square feet.
Unique Challenges
The project presented challenges that underscored the expertise and adaptability of our Giroux Glass team. Overcoming limited access around the site required the deployment of specialized equipment, including a 135′ boom lift and a 125′ crane, to install the heavy glass units safely and efficiently. Additionally, the removal and replacement of these large and weighty glass lites required exceptional coordination, particularly in confined areas around the building’s façade.
Collaboration with Roebbelen Contracting ensured the seamless removal of sunshades in front of the work zones, which facilitated a smooth installation process despite the logistical complexities.
Highlights of the Glass Installation
- Thickness and Security: The 1-13/16″ thick ballistic glass offered the courthouse Ballistic Level 3-rated protection, ensuring safety for the occupants without compromising aesthetic appeal.
- Energy Efficiency: The use of Low E tempered insulated glass provided optimal energy performance while maintaining clarity and light transmission.
- Precision Engineering: The use of Dow Corning 795 sealant and meticulous attention to detail ensured a flawless finish for each unit installed.
Collaboration and Key Partners
The success of the project was made possible through effective collaboration with various stakeholders, including the building’s architect Development One, the glass supplier and fabricator ISOCLIMA, as well as the Judicial Counsel of California, which served as the developer and owner. Giroux Glass’s team of expert glaziers — Ray Valdez, Brandon Valdez, Juan Martinez, Larry Castillo, Pat Dickenson, and Chris Gonzales — led the installation work, with support from estimator Jared Smith and project manager John Smith.
Employee Perspective
Reflecting on the project, Larry Castillo, one of the lead glaziers, remarked, “The GC did a great job coordinating site access and the removal of sunshades, which facilitated the process. It was a challenging project, but thanks to the teamwork and planning, everything went smoothly.”
Outcome
Despite the logistical and technical complexities, Giroux Glass delivered a high-quality result that met the courthouse’s elevated security and aesthetic standards. Our precision installation of Low E ballistic glass ensures that the Porterville Courthouse remains a safe, energy-efficient, and visually striking facility for years to come.
