USC Coliseum glass and glazing by Giroux Glass

Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum

Project Scope and Description

Giroux Glass has worked on the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum several times over the past 70+ years. Our most recent project entailed fitting and installing glass for the arena’s $270 million renovations. Our glazing work can be found in the entrance, suites, loge boxes, concourse, and press box of the iconic arena’s new, luxurious Southside structure.

Our team of Union glaziers worked to install the following elements:

  • 8000 square feet of Kawneer 1600 wall systems
  • 4600 sq. ft of Kawneer storefront systems
  • 42 Kawneer storefront doors and their hardware
  • 3500 sq. ft. of ½” tempered Starphire All Glass Entrances, including 23 All Glass Doors
  • 4000 sq. ft. of Motorized windows by Tepco
  • 2400 sq. ft. of Avadeck canopy glass
  • a Dorma Sliding Partition
  • Tepco Motorized windows at the press level

Challenges & Solutions

Every project poses its own unique challenges, and this one was no exception. Most of the obstacles the Giroux Glass team faced in the Coliseum remodel were related to the sheer size and breadth of its glass installations. The myriad glass systems involved in the renovation required coordination with a large variety of vendors, which could be difficult from a project management standpoint. One particularly involved component was a custom sliding Dorma door system, which had to be shipped from Germany and installed according to very particular, unique specifications.

To tackle the diverse requirements of Giroux Glass’ multiple installations, our ground team and project managers had to coordinate closely with the general contractor and outside vendors.

Another difficult aspect was the very tight turnaround the project entailed. The Coliseum has a very busy event schedule that includes home games for both the USC Trojans and the L.A. Rams, soccer games, music festivals, special events, and more. The venue’s busy nature necessitated an aggressive approach to work, and our team employed multiple time-saving strategies to ensure they met all deadlines. These included arranging for on-site deliveries of all components, the use of a tower crane to safely and swiftly lift heavy loads, and a lot of overtime on behalf of our glaziers, especially in the last 3 months of the project.

Fortunately, these tactics paid off. The renovation was completed just in time for USC’s first home game of the season.
