Cal State LA BioSpace
Cal State LA BioSpace was created to address critical shortages of bioscience entrepreneurs and of lab space for startup companies and to promote the bioscience industry in Los Angeles. The university is dedicated to creating a culture of inclusivity and providing emerging entrepreneurs with the necessary facilities, resources, training, and knowledge to launch their own startup ventures, thus contributing to regional economic development.
The BioSpace also provides research opportunities for students and faculty members. This integration of academia, industry, and entrepreneurship fosters innovation and contributes to the overall growth and development of the bioscience sector in the Los Angeles region. The incubator was developed with grants from multiple sources, including Los Angeles County, the U.S. Economic Development Administration, the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation, and the Amgen Foundation.
The BioSpace incubator is located at the southern gateway of Cal State LA, within the Rongxiang Xu Bioscience Innovation Center. It spans over 20,000 sq. ft. and includes wet and dry laboratory space, versatile classrooms, equipment, and conference rooms. These features enable thirty bioscience startups to work on transforming scientific advances into business ventures with the potential to result in job opportunities and economic success.
Architectural firm, Lundstrom and Associates, designed the modern structure, and general contractors, Sundt Construction, completed the project.
Giroux Glass was proud to have provided the glazing on this project. Our scope included the installation of stick-built curtain wall and storefront on the building’s exterior. The focal point of the inside space is a stair system enclosed with glass guardrails, which we completed in the central atrium area. The overall impact is an interior environment flooded by light, one that we hope helps to provide inspiration to the promising students and budding entrepreneurs within.
