Last week, Giroux Glass participated in the fourth Annual Career Fair at California High School, in Whittier, California. The career fair hosted more than 2,500 students between the ages of 14-19 years old. “Why a high school,” one could well wonder? Along with Nataline Lomedico, our CEO and president, I attended the 2nd annual Career Fair at California High School, in Whittier on Friday, February 3rd. It was at a NAWIC Orange County networking dinner, the previous week, where I learned about this event from Izzy Zandvliet, (shown below at her own NAWIC table) , and when I eagerly signed us up to host a table. The Job Fair was open to all students from grade levels 9 through 12, and the school estimates that about 2,800 attended over an extended lunch hour.
I recently traveled to Washington, D.C. with Marisela Miranda (Giroux’s assistant controller) to attend this year’s ESOP Association National Conference. Our exciting reason for going was that Marisela was selected as Employee-Owner of the Year, for the California/Western States Chapter, for 2015-2016! The attendees at the National Conference included the honorees from all of the other regions as well. Everyone at Giroux Glass was so excited for her, since, together, our partners chose to nominate Marisela for taking the initiative in heading up our “Culture Committee,” and to educate and motivate her colleagues by promoting a culture of employee-ownership. Performance reviews often are dreaded and poorly understood. Managers want to avoid feedback that is not positive, and subordinates are liable to feel defensive when praise is not forthcoming. So, here at Giroux, we don’t let negativity or discomfort creep into our processes. I was tasked with improving the performance review system. After doing some research and engaging in intensive conversations with employees on all levels, I was able to put together a format that works beautifully and (mostly) avoids tension and disappointment. Today, our performance reviews are geared toward coaching and empowering each partner.
